Choosing a stain color is the most exciting part of a refinish — and the easiest place to end up with a surprise. A few simple habits make it much more likely that the floor you get is the floor you pictured.
Test on your own floor, not on a brochure. The same stain looks different on different species, on different boards and even on wood that has been sanded differently. That's why we apply stain samples directly to your freshly sanded floor, side by side, so you can see each color on your own wood before anything is committed.
Know your wood. Most hardwood floors in Connecticut homes are oak, which has an open, pronounced grain that soaks up stain and shows it off. Red oak naturally has warm, pinkish undertones, and white oak leans more toward olive and tan — the same stain can read noticeably different on each. If your floor is another species, testing matters even more.
Look at the samples in your own light. Check them in the morning, in the afternoon and with the lamps on at night. North-facing rooms tend to make colors look cooler and darker, while sunny rooms warm them up. Also step back: a small sample usually looks lighter than the same color across a whole room. Think about your walls, cabinets and furniture too.
Then choose a sheen. Matte has very little shine and gives a natural, modern look. Satin has a soft glow and is a popular all-around choice. Semi-gloss and gloss reflect more light and give a rich, polished look. The trade-off is that the shinier the finish, the more it tends to show scratches, scuffs and dust.
Be realistic about daily life. Very dark stains look dramatic but tend to show dust, pet hair and light scratches more readily; very light floors can show dirt tracked in from outside. Mid-tone colors with a matte or satin sheen are generally the most forgiving in busy homes with kids and pets.
