Hardwood vs. Vinyl: Choosing the Right Floor for Each Room

When homeowners ask us whether they should go with hardwood or vinyl, the honest answer is usually: it depends on the room. Each material has real strengths, and the best results often come from choosing room by room instead of putting one floor everywhere.

Start with the climate. Wood is a natural material that takes on and gives off moisture, so it expands in humid Connecticut summers and shrinks when the heat runs all winter. Small seasonal gaps between boards in winter are normal and usually close up again when the air gets more humid. Keeping indoor humidity reasonably steady helps any wood floor, but it's also why some rooms are a better fit for wood than others.

Basements are the clearest case. They tend to be cooler and damper than the rest of the house, and many sit directly on concrete. Solid hardwood generally isn't recommended below grade. Water-resistant vinyl handles those conditions much better, and it's comfortable and good-looking, which is why it's our usual suggestion for finished basements.

Kitchens can go either way. Vinyl stands up well to spills, dropped pans and heavy traffic, and it's easy to clean. Hardwood gives a kitchen warmth and can flow straight in from the dining or living room, and with a good finish it holds up well — as long as water is wiped up promptly and leaks under the sink or dishwasher are caught early. Your cooking habits, kids and pets all factor in.

Bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms are where hardwood really shines. These spaces stay dry, see moderate traffic and benefit most from wood's look and long life. A big plus: when solid hardwood eventually wears, it can usually be sanded and refinished rather than replaced.

Engineered hardwood is the middle ground. It has a real-wood surface over a layered core that is more dimensionally stable than solid boards, so it tends to move less with the seasons. That can make it a good choice where you want real wood but the conditions are less than ideal. Keep in mind that how many times it can be refinished depends on the thickness of its wear layer.
